What intrigued me about Mikimoto jewellery was that the founder is Japanese. From my knowledge ancient Japan did not have or make jewellery pieces. I choose Mikimoto jewellery for my list of top jewellery houses because it is a Japanese jewellery house. I wanted to find out how can a top jewellery house come from a country that did not make jewellery pieces in the past.
Kokichi Mikimoto was the first person to make cultured pearls. In 1888 he started his experiments to create cultured pearls and in 1893 he achieved his goal. Kokichi Mikimoto opened his first shop in Ginza Japan and Mikimoto jewellery went international in 1913. Natural pearls is very hard to find due to the fact that almost all to pearls were harvested that is why Kokichi Mikimoto made cultured pearls. Now Mikimoto is know for its beautiful pearl jewellery.
The necklace below was made by Kokichi Mikimoto. He hand picked 49 pearls over a period of 10 years. the largest pearl in the center on the necklace being fourteen millimeters in diameter. The necklace is in the pearl museum in Japan. The necklace was named Taisho-ren meaning the boss's string of pearls.
